Ubuntu Nutzer kennen sicher den Ubuntu One Service. Mit diesem Dienst konnte man bis zu 5 Gigabyte Daten in der Cloud speichern.
Wie Canonical jetzt bekanntgibt, wird dieser Service zum 1. Juni 2014 geschlossen.
Ab diesem Datum ist es technisch nicht mehr möglich, Musik über diesen Dienst zu kaufen oder über die 5 Gigabyte hinausgehenden, kostenpflichtigen Speicherplatz zu erwerben. Seine in der „Ubuntu Wolke“ gelagerten Dateien sollte man sich spätestens bis zum 31. Juli 2014 herunterladen und sichern. Danach ist alles weg.
Ich veröffentliche hier einmal die Info-Mail, die an mich gegangen ist:

Ubuntu One file services, effective 1 June 2014. This email gives
information about the closure and what you should expect during the
shutdown process.As of today, it will no longer be possible to purchase storage or music
from the Ubuntu One store. The Ubuntu One file services apps in the Ubuntu,
Google, and Apple stores will be updated appropriately.As always, your content belongs to you. You can simply download your files
onto your PC or an external hard drive. While the service will stop as of
1 June, you will have an additional two months (until 31 July 2014) to
collect all of your content. After that date, all remaining content will
be deleted.If you have an active annual subscription, the unused portion of your fees
will be refunded. The refund amount will be calculated from today's
announcement.We know you have come to rely on Ubuntu One, and we apologise for the

</pre>An anderen Stellen im Netz liest man auch Begründungen für das Aus von Ubuntu One.
Dieser Service gehöre nicht zum Kerngeschäft von Ubuntu Hersteller Canonical und hatte mit Dropbox, Google Drive, Microsoft SkyDrive (heisst jetzt auch anders) und Co. übermächtige Konkurrenz.
Zudem will Canonical seine Ressourcen bündeln, um Ubuntu endlich auf Tablets und Smartphones zu bringen. Das Überleben von Linux Systemen hängt nicht vom Anbieten von Cloudspeicherlösungen ab, sondern von der Etablierung im mobilen Sektor.Ich persönlich trauere diesem Dienst schon etwas nach. Nicht wegen der 5 Gigabyte (auch wenn jedes Bisschen zählt), aber es gab so nette Spielereien wie das Organisieren von Dateianhängen bei Thunderbird-Emails. Dafür muss man sich jetzt wieder andere Lösungen suchen.
